Administrator keeps an eye on budget details, costs

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Village Administrator Mike Miller said that his past 29 years of administrative experience make him “…budgeted oriented and cost conscious.” With infrastructure projects occupying 39 percent of the Village’s overall fiscal budget, he plans to be proactive in requiring detailed estimates in the future.

“As the amount of tax dollars associated with expenditures rise, so does my expectation of results,” he told trustees in a recent report following a $50,000 cost overrun associated with the Cox Street construction that is part of the 2012 street improvements project. Ten to 12 variables were included in one engineering invoice for this particular project.

“I don’t know how to control cost with a lump sum,” he said. Questioning the use of Village funds is a responsibility included in his job description, he said.

“We are working on revamping our estimation process so I can analyze what we are spending the tax dollars on,” he said.
