Amateur men’s softball tourney Aug. 1-3 at park; alcohol will be served

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Forsyth Park will be the place to be to catch some top-notch softball when the village hosts the 2014 Illinois Amateur Softball Association Men’s Class C Fast Pitch State Tournament running Aug. 1-3. The event is a unique one for the village, particularly because alcohol will be served.

Amber Jackson, director of sales and sports for the Decatur Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke to the board on June 2 to request approval to hold a special event on public property where alcohol would be served.

A liquor license was also needed for the event, but the board had to approve the sale and consumption of alcohol on public property before the license could be applied for.

Last fall, when the subject first came up, Village Attorney Jeff Jurgens stated that it wasn’t unusual for a municipality to seek a special event license. This instance, he said, just happened to involve an event to be held in the village’s park.

Teri Hammel, executive director of the DACVB, told the board at the time that there were a number of communities hoping to attract such an ASA event. Hammel told the board that the competition between communities vying for these types of events was fierce for the simple reason that the tournaments are “such moneymakers.”

Fast forward to last month when the request was formally put on the agenda: Trustee Steve Hubbard made the motion to approve the DACVB’s request to hold a special event where alcohol is sold and served in Forsyth Park. Trustee Larry Reed seconded the motion. All present voted Yea, and the motion carried.

Mayor Marilyn Johnson made the comment that the village was looking forward to the event and that it would be a good thing for the community. 
