ASA Fastpitch Invitational a win for village

Thursday, August 14, 2014

The Central Illinois Knights won their third straight state championship as they cruised through unbeaten to take the title in the 2014 Illinois ASA Men’s Fastpitch Invitational State Tournament at Forsyth Park.

Nine teams came to town to compete for the American Softball Association’s Class C Men’s Fastpitch championship held Aug. 1-3. The Knights beat the Pinckneyville Celtics in the title game 3-1 as Jose DeLeon was named Most Valuable Pitcher.

The village approved a special event license in order to serve alcohol. In the competitive world of hosting softball tournaments, the liquor license was a key element to landing the event. Without it, the ASA would possibly have gone elsewhere.

Late last year, when village trustees made the decision to pursue the tournament, they were advised by Teri Hammel, executive director of the Decatur Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, that other communities would be fiercely competing for such an event because there were pretty big tourism dollars at stake.

At the Aug. 4 board meeting, the day following the tournament’s finish, deputies with the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, reported to trustees that there had been no problems associated with the tournament. 
