Bergner’s turns out the lights after 40 years

Thursday, September 13, 2018

Original mall tenant a fixture since 1978

The liquidation sale is over, and Bergner’s has left the building. The large, two-story retailer, once a bustling place full of shoppers — where kids liked to ride the prominent escalator and elevator — now sits empty. Bergner’s was one of the original stores at Hickory Point Mall when it opened back in 1978; the final day came on August 29.

Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., the parent company of Bergner’s and several other well-known department store brands, announced in April that it was closing all of its 250 stores across the country, including 40-plus Bergner’s stores throughout Illinois. Bon-Ton filed for bankruptcy in early 2018.

CBL Properties, based in Chattanooga, owns and operates Hickory Point Mall and a number of U.S. malls. The firm has been working to fill vacancies left by Bon-Ton at many of its properties as the retail shopping landscape in America undergoes a major shift.
