Bust of Chicago theft ring at mall

Thursday, December 31, 2015

Macon County Sheriff’s Deputy Cassandra Barnes reported to trustees at the Dec. 21 board meeting that she recently arrested a female suspect on 11 felony counts, including identity theft, forgery and burglary at Hickory Point Mall.

The suspect is originally from Macon County, but the theft ring itself is based in Chicago, Barnes said. The group has been active for about 2 ½ years across a number of mostly Midwestern states. Five or six Von Maur stores have been targeted in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and as far away as Ann Arbor, Michigan. The suspect had stolen a Macon County resident’s identity.

Locally, Bergner’s and Kohl’s were hit, in addition to Von Maur. The suspect gave a full confession on video but then bonded out the next day. Authorities do not know where she is at this point, but they are looking for her. Barnes said multiple law enforcement agencies are involved, and there is a possibility that federal law enforcement may join in the investigation.

Barnes said all stores at Hickory Point Mall have photos of the suspect and her accomplices.
