Disc Golf Open champ hails from Georgia

Thursday, August 17, 2017

The Forsyth-Decatur Disc Golf Open was held the last weekend in July.

The tournament drew 78 players — 12 of those are professionals — from seven different states. Last year, 61 players came to town to compete in the event. This year’s winner, Matt Dollar, is from Georgia.

This was the first year the Village was part of a two-day tournament, with two rounds played at Forsyth Park and two rounds played at Nelson Park in Decatur.

“The Village looks to grow the tournament and reach more players with this two-day format,” Trustee Bob Gruenewald, the Village’s point person on disc golf, said.

Gruenewald said that the date of the tournament is important because it falls just before a major tournament held in Peoria, which helps attract players. He added that competitors were impressed with the quality and condition of the course at Forsyth Park, and he expressed his thanks to the Public Works Department staff for having the course in “excellent shape.”

Gruenewald said local support came via hole sponsors and contributions from the Decatur Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Decatur Park District, Decatur Blue, the local disc golf club and the Village of Forsyth.

The Village’s financial commitment was $2,600, Gruenewald said. He said the DACVB was instrumental in handling publicity, fliers and registering participants.

“Overall, it was a very successful event,” Gruenewald said. “We got a lot of comments from players saying they’ll be back next year.”

Teri Hammel, DACVB’s executive director, said she plans to try to land a women’s national tournament next year.
