Fall leaf and limb pickup facts

Thursday, October 15, 2015

This is the time of year when two curbside services — daily leaf pickup service and weekly tree limb collection — overlap in the village. Below are some important facts about these two free services.

Fall leaf pickup service
The village’s annual daily leaf pickup program begins Oct. 19. This free service continues until Dec. 4. Leaves must be in place every morning by 8 a.m. on collection days. There is no pickup on holidays and weekends.
Leaf pickup rules include:

  • Brush, sticks or grass clippings are not allowed to be mixed in with leaves. The service is for disposal of leaves only.
  • Landscape waste in the form of grass clippings and garden waste is prohibited since there is the potential for chemical residues that may interfere with crop growth on land where the leaves are later applied.
  • It is helpful and will speed up the process if leaves are placed in piles away from mailboxes, sign and utility poles and intersections so that vacuum equipment can be used properly and not causing delays.
  • To avoid some of the dust produced by leaf pickup, sprinkle piles of dry, dusty leaves with water prior to collection times.

The village’s policy is that village staff may refuse to remove any landscape waste deemed not in compliance with guidelines. Removal of any landscape waste that does not qualify as leaves is not the responsibility of the village.

Tree limb collection
Tree limb collection, which has been under way since spring, continues on a weekly basis (every Monday) until December. Tree limbs should be no longer than 8 feet in length and no greater than 10 inches in diameter and must be in place by 8 a.m. Monday mornings only. The village has the right to refuse to remove any landscape waste deemed not a tree limb. Tree limbs are defined as a limb removed from the trunk of a tree. Trunks and root balls of a tree are not acceptable.

Burn ordinance
There is not a burn ban in the village, however, there is a burn ordinance with a minimum $25 fine for each violation. Only yard waste can be burned, and burning can only be done on dry days and must be completed before dusk, which means there is no burning at night. These rules are in place to prevent anyone from being a nuisance to their neighbors.

If there’s ever a time when your leaves aren’t picked up after two days, contact Village Hall at 877-9445.
