Fall leaf pickup service starts daily beginning October 19

Thursday, October 01, 2015

It’s that time of year when temperatures cool and leaves start to fall from trees. That means it’s also time for the village’s annual daily leaf pickup program. The free service officially begins on Oct. 19 and continues until Dec. 4. Leaves must be in place every morning by 8 a.m. on collection days. Remember, there is no pickup on holidays and weekends.

Leaf pickup rules include:

  • Brush, sticks or grass clippings are not allowed to be mixed in with leaves. The service is for disposal of leaves only.
  • Landscape waste in the form of grass clippings and garden waste is prohibited since there is the potential for chemical residues that may interfere with crop growth on land where the leaves are later applied.
  • It is helpful and will speed up the process if leaves are placed in piles away from mailboxes, sign and utility poles and intersections so that vacuum equipment can be used properly and not cause delays.
  • To avoid some of the dust produced by leaf pickup, sprinkle piles of dry, dusty leaves with water prior to collection times.

The village’s policy is that village staff may refuse to remove any landscape waste deemed not in compliance with guidelines. Removal of any landscape waste that does not qualify as leaves is not the responsibility of the village.

Burn ordinance: There is not a burn ban in the village, however, there is a burn ordinance with a minimum $25 fine for each violation. Only yard waste can be burned, and burning can only be done on dry days and must be completed before dusk, which means there is no burning at night. These rules were put in place, according to Public Works Director Larry Coloni, to prevent anyone from being a nuisance to their neighbors.

If there’s ever a time when your leaves aren’t picked up after two days, contact Village Hall at 877-9445.
