Free leaf pickup program starts again in mid-October

Thursday, September 26, 2013

It’s about that time for the village’s annual free leaf pickup program to begin. Daily leaf pickup officially starts Oct. 14 and runs until Dec. 6. There will be no pickup on holidays and weekends, and leaves must be in place by 8 a.m. on collection days. Leaf pickup rules include the following:

  • No brush, sticks or grass clippings are to be mixed in with leaves. This is for disposal of leaves only.
  • Landscape waste such as grass clippings and garden waste are prohibited due to the potential of chemical residues that may interfere with crop growth on land where leaves are applied.
  • Place leaves in piles away from mailboxes, sign and utility poles and intersections so that vacuum equipment can be used properly while not causing delays.
  • You can avoid some of the dust produced by leaf pickup by sprinkling piles of dry, dusty leaves with water prior to collection times.

Village policy states that village staff has the right to refuse to remove any landscape waste not in compliance with guidelines, and it is not the village’s duty to help residents with removal of landscape waste that does not qualify as leaves.

Remember, while there is no burn ban in the village, there is a burn ordinance with a minimum $25 fine for each violation. Only yard waste should be burned, and burning can only be done on dry days and completed before dusk — in other words, no burning at night.

These rules are in place, according to Public Works Director Larry Coloni, to prevent anyone from being a nuisance to their neighbors.
If more than two days pass before leaves are picked up or if you have other questions, contact Village Hall at 877-9445.
