Free shuttles to Farm Progress to be offered again this year

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Preparations are underway for the Village’s participation in the Farm Progress Show to be held in Decatur Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

Mayor Hap Gilbert labeled Forsyth as the “economic center of the Farm Progress area” and said it is incumbent upon Village leaders to have some type of presence in the event. To that end, the Village, together with the Decatur Public Transit System, will once again provide free shuttle rides to and from Hickory Point Mall to Progress City in Decatur where the show is being staged.

Farm Progress officials estimated that the 2009 show boosted the economy in the Decatur area by at least $7 million dollars. Gilbert said providing the shuttle service is the “…ideal way for the Village to have the spotlight during the Farm Progress Show” because it draws people and gives them the opportunity to shop, patronize the gasoline stations and eat at the variety of restaurants.

Committee members have begun to develop plans in which retailers could participate with the Village in its efforts to offer hospitality to the shuttle passengers. The initial step is to set up an air-conditioned tent at the south end of the mall near Bergner’s where the shuttle will make its stops.
