Golf cart drivers: PLEASE SLOW DOWN!

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Several residents with homes adjacent to Village multi-use walking/ bike paths are asking golf cart drivers to slow down and watch for children when operating their carts on the paths.

Battery-powered vehicles, including golf carts, may be legally operated at speeds less than 20 mph on Village sidewalks and bike paths, except those within the boundaries of Forsyth Park. However, concerned residents say some golf cart operators recklessly drive at speeds that could endanger Forsyth children.

Golf carts are among the motorized vehicles weighing more than 75 pounds that may be operated by a licensed driver on the paths. Medical walk-assisted vehicles are also permitted. In 2009, Village trustees reviewed and amended an existing ordinance to prohibit the use of gasoline or diesel-powered recreational vehicles anywhere within Forsyth except on the owner’s property, the parent or guardian’s property or other property only with permission. The regulated vehicles include:

  • Snowmobiles
  • Minibikes
  • Motorbikes
  • Motor scooters
  • Go-karts
  • All-terrain vehicles and
  • Off-highway motorcycles.

Violators face monetary penalties enforced by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.
