Guce wins dry Decatur-Forsyth Classic

Thursday, August 25, 2016

Clariss Guce shot a final-round 71 to post an aggregate score of 206 (10-under par) to win the 32nd Decatur-Forsyth Classic by two shots. Guce, a rookie originally from the Philippines, took home the winner’s check, presented to her by Mayor Marilyn Johnson, for $19,500. It marked Guce’s second tour win.

This was also the first time the tournament wasn’t played in June, which often saw early summer rains plague the event over the years, never worse than last year when weather washed out two rounds making it an 18-hole event. This year’s event went on as scheduled.

Back in 2014, village trustees agreed to a multi-year sponsorship of the tournament, committing to $75,000 each year for three years. The tournament is the oldest tournament on the Symetra LPGA Tour, which bills itself as “The Road to the LPGA.”

At the time of the commitment, Tournament Director Cindy Deadrick-Wolfer told trustees she thought it was important to keep the tournament going.

“I know we’re asking a lot of you, and I appreciate that,” Deadrick-Wolfer told trustees two years ago. “But, I believe in all my heart that this is a good use of the hotel/motel tax.”

Trustees agreed by approving the sponsorship unanimously. The tournament brings players, caddies, officials and fans from around the country and the world to stay in local hotels for a week and enjoy the area’s shopping and dining opportunities.
