Mall sees 93 percent occupancy

Thursday, January 13, 2011

A five-year record was set this past holiday season at the Hickory Point Mall with a 93 percent occupancy rate in leased spaces.

“We’ll see a dip in January, but in February there will be just five vacancies and most of these are small stores,” said mall manager Bryan Bell.

In early March, CapZ Pro Image will trade in its 900-square-foot space at the south end of the mall and relocate to a 2,300-square-foot location near center court once occupied by a seasonal games and toys store.

Bell said two of the three largest vacant storefronts have been leased with a third one being prepared for the Feb. 1 opening of The Bouncy House in the 9,300 square-foot store recently vacated by Famous Labels across from center court.

Bell described The Bouncy House as “...a kids play area with different inflatable houses” suitable for jumping and bouncing. He predicted this new area will become a popular entertainment venue for birthday parties and other celebrations.

Cohn Furniture opened in late summer in the former Old Navy space, and Bell said the owners have reported an increase in customers and sales in both their downtown Decatur location and at the mall.

Shoe Dept. Encore had a late fall opening in the 28,000 square-foot area that was once home to Steve & Barry’s.

In general, Hickory Point Mall experienced strong sales numbers in the year 2010, according to Bell. He said the International Council of Shopping Centers projects a fourth quarter increase of 3.5 percent in sales.

“While December is a hinging factor, [we are] ahead of that projection and feel good about it,” Bell said.
