Mall shuttle to Farm Progress Show returns

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Free shuttle service to the Farm Progress site in Decatur will be offered from the south end of the Hickory Point Mall near Bergner’s Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

The service is a cooperative effort between the Village and the Decatur Public Transit System, according to Mayor Hap Gilbert. The mayor and an ad hoc committee have made arrangements for a tent to be set up at the shuttle site to welcome passengers beginning at 7 a.m. each day. Two shuttles will operate every 30 minutes with the last shuttle arriving at the mall at 5 p.m. Committee members Jack and Linda Hilberling, Ron Oliver and Tim Boland have joined the efforts to provide free water for persons using the shuttle. Gift bags donated by mall merchants may be available as well.

“It’s a real good opportunity to showcase the Village and to get people to stop in the Village to use the shuttle,” Gilbert said. “It gives them an added reason to stay and shop and avail themselves of services like our restaurants and gasoline stations.”

The impact from the Farm Progress Show lasts more than a month. “Workers servicing the Farm Progress Show come in advance and fill up the motels,” he added.

The 2011 Farm Progress Show is billed as “the nation’s greatest greatest ag showcase!” This year country music star Rodney Atkins will perform on Aug. 31.
