Millikin cross country meet coming to Forsyth Park

Thursday, September 17, 2015

Forsyth Park will be the site of an upcoming collegiate track meet when Millikin University’s H. W. Wright Classic Cross Country Meet is held here on Friday, Oct. 2.

Competitors for this event will include both men’s and women’s cross country teams. Small colleges from the region usually come to town to compete in the event. Race Times are as follows: Women’s 6K starts at 4:30 p.m. followed by the men’s 8K at 5:15 p.m.

Back in August, a track coach from Millikin had asked Public Works Director Larry Coloni if the village might be interested in hosting a regional cross country meet in the fall. Coloni reported to trustees last month that he had responded to the inquiry by saying that he thought the village would be excited about the possibility.

Coloni reported back to trustees at the Sept. 8 meeting that the university had made a visit to review Forsyth Park to determine if it would be suitable for their needs. The park passed the test as Millikin confirmed in a press release dated Aug. 31 that it would bring the cross country meet to Forsyth Park on Oct. 2.

In the past, the event has been held at South Shores Park, and Scovill and Hickory Point golf courses. The press release described the course at Forsyth Park as “level grass with rolling hills.”

There will be designated sites for team camps and parking will be available in designated areas at Forsyth Park for team vans and mini buses on a first-come, first-serve basis.
