Police protection contract up for renewal

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Negotiations are underway to renew the Village’s three-year police protection contract with the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

Village Administrator Heather Kimmons said she believes the current staffing level is adequate with five deputies covering the Village on a 24/7 basis. “If someone feels strongly the other way, I am open to listening and to gaining their input,” she said.

At one time, deputies maintained an office at Village Hall, and Kimmons would like to see a return to that setup which would contribute to their increased presence in the Village.

Contractual agreements with Forsyth began in 1976 and have continued under five different Macon County sheriffs. The current three-year contract price of $1,169,767 is set to expire May 31. An earlier study found that it would not be feasible for the Village to have its own police chief, dispatcher and administrative support.
