Residence Inn nears completion

Thursday, September 25, 2014

The last piece of the puzzle for the new Residence Inn by Marriott seems to have fallen nicely into place.

Aimee Fyke, chief operating officer for Tharaldson Hospitality Management, the company that has transformed an open field next to Lowe’s into a modern, four-story, 96-room hotel, paid a visit to the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission on Aug. 28.

Fyke, who lives in Forsyth, was seeking permission to add a third wall sign to the property. The proposed sign would be lighted and located on the hotel’s east side facing the cornfield with the idea of attracting travelers on Interstate 72.

Planning and Zoning commissioners approved the request on a 6-0 vote, and then on Sept. 2, trustees made it official also voting 6-0 approving Ordinance No. 921, the variance that allows for the requested sign.

This is a project that became a reality when trustees approved rezoning the property back in May of 2013, and ground was broke later that summer. Key staff members have now been hired, and if all goes well in the closing weeks of construction, the hotel should be ready to welcome its first guests in November, Fyke said.

“We are very excited to bring an upscale Marriott extended-stay product to the Decatur/Forsyth market,” Fyke said. “Residence Inn is the largest brand in the upscale extended-stay category with over 650 locations.”

The hotel features studio, 1- and 2-bedroom suites with full kitchens and bathrooms with walk-in showers or tubs, depending on preference.

Fyke noted that the suites are designed for longer stays, adding that it’s the company’s “mission to provide our guests with everything they need to thrive while on the road.”
