Rinsing paint brushes into storm sewers not only dangerous but also illegal

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Human beings are the usual suspects when it comes to pollution. It doesn’t just happen in other neighborhoods. Recent evidence shows someone used the village’s storm drain system to clean paint brushes. Whether you agree that such action is irresponsible, lazy or a minor detail, there can be no arguing that it is against the law.

Paint in a storm drain is a big deal, especially because there is always a consequence downstream. Often innocent wildlife is most affected. But storm water flows into creeks, rivers and lakes. Think about that next time you go boating or swimming with your children.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, storm drains are for the sole purpose of collecting rainwater overflow. Dumping paint or other pollutants is a federal violation of the Clean Water Act of 1972.
