Rock of Ages to highlight Fest entertainment

Thursday, February 17, 2011

The Decatur-based band Rock of Ages will provide entertainment for this year’s Forsyth Family Fest June 17-18 in Forsyth Park. The annual fest is free for Forsyth residents.

Trustee and Activities & Committee chair Marilyn Johnson said a $1,400 contract was recently signed with the local classic rock group. “It’s good for the community and good for the budget,” she said. Committee members wanted to find a local group to eliminate travel and lodging costs.

Clay County Amusements will return to furnish and operate amusement rides for $10,000, the same price as last year. Fireworks will cost $7,500 again this year and be provided by Central States Fireworks Inc. of Athens. The committee also obtained repeat pricing for horse and carriage rides and for the contract from the tent company that provides all vendor and food tents.

The four-member committee is working within a $40,000 budget. One of the prime goals this year is to have more afternoon activities throughout the fest. The tractor pedal pull was eliminated this year because of past low attendance.

Committee members were enthused at new member Paula Bauler’s suggestion for a dunk tank. A major committee goal is to find more volunteers to help with the two-day event. Johnson said volunteering does not mean that helping with the fest extends to yearlong committee work.

“Just putting on tablecloths, helping with bingo or going to different businesses to get bingo prize contributions. All these things would help,” she said.
