Shared wall with shared halls

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Inside the Board Room at Village Hall there is a wall where the official photographs of all the previous mayors who have held office are hung. The framed likenesses begin in chronological order with a photo of the Village’s first mayor, James K. Flint, marking the starting line at the far right of the display. Each mayor’s photo is accompanied by his name and years of service. Flint’s tenure reads from 1958 to 1960.

Moving along, photo by photo, mayor by mayor, the arrangement moves to the left all the way through to Mayor Hap Gilbert’s photograph, which anchors the end opposite of Flint, with five more mayors between them. The mayors in the photo display, of course, share a common feature: They are all men. As soon as Mayor Marilyn Johnson’s official photo is ready to be placed on the wall, the décor will see a discernible change, and the previous mayors would likely agree it’s one for the better.

And, because Johnson has lived in Flint’s former home since 1968, it won’t be the first time they’ve shared — albeit, in different eras — a wall … and hallways, for that matter.
