Summer rec program grows after slow start

Thursday, July 14, 2011

The summer recreation program will continue through July 21 after getting off to a slow start due to a delayed mailing of calendars and mid-90 degree temperatures that affected attendance the first three days.

Program director Mike Poe provided trustees with an overview of the program’s operation and noted that 66 families with a total of 115 children have signed up for activities that range from archery to fishing to a scavenger hunt. The number of children participating in the 10 a.m.-noon segment increases when compared to the 9-10 a.m. segment of the program, Poe said. He noted that there are typically six children present during the first hour, 9-10 a.m. The movie and pizza party were especially popular, attracting 39 participants.

Poe said that he expects greater attendance at the programs if the temperatures cool down. Four park counselors help with the program: Maria Blumhorst, Katie Clawson, Abby Cole and Ellen Weiss.
