Trachtenberg heads Family Fest, sets first planning meeting Jan. 28

Thursday, January 16, 2014

We just welcomed in 2014, and summertime fun seems pretty darn far away as you slog through snow and ice, but the fun does indeed start now.

The new chairperson for the 2014 Forsyth Family Fest Committee is Village Trustee Kerstin Trachtenberg. Trachtenberg has called her first meeting of the planning committee for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Village Hall.

Trachtenberg plans for the committee to meet approximately one evening a month until June (probably twice in May) until the big event. Volunteers — that includes women and men of all ages — are needed and welcome.

“It’s a great way to meet new people and enjoy readying all the fun,” Trachtenberg said, adding that, “if you have great ideas and enjoy seeing the community come together for a family-friendly weekend celebration, join us.”

On the docket this year (so far) are the following popular activities: community cookout, 5K Fun Run, parade, carnival rides, activities and games, entertainment, food vendors and the fireworks finale.

Last August, Mayor Marilyn Johnson chose Trachtenberg to succeed her in the position and then put the idea before the board. The choice was certainly well received as Trachtenberg sailed through with unanimous approval.

While the capable Trachtenberg is enthused and up for the new challenge, she sees following the mayor as the event’s planner as “big shoes to fill.” Meanwhile, the mayor herself thinks things are in pretty good hands.

“I have great confidence in Kerstin,” Johnson said. “She is an enthusiastic person, and she has a lot of experience in this type of work. I think she will bring new and exciting ideas to the committee.”
