Trustees review this year’s Family Fest

Thursday, August 11, 2016

In a review of this year’s Family Fest, Trustee Kerstin Trachtenberg, the festival’s chairperson, told board members that each year she thinks it’s important to go over how things went, both good and bad, and get feedback from trustees once the event is in the books for the year.

The total budget for Family Fest is $40,000, with $12,000 of that going to the company that provides the carnival rides in Forsyth Park. Conner Family Amusements of Beardstown has been the vendor of choice the past two years, Trachtenberg said.

“I think they’re a great company to work with and great with kids,” Trachtenberg said. “I think they do a really great job. It’s a family business.”

Public Works Director Larry Coloni, who is very involved in making the event a success and working with Conner, said he agreed with Trachtenberg that Conner is a good company to work with.

“I echo that,” Coloni said. “Their rides are newer, and they’re cleaner. I like that they stay in our hotels.”

Trachtenberg said going forward she’d like to see more volunteers helping with setting up for the cookout to relieve some of the burden from Coloni’s staff. She was also concerned about the event growing to the point that there are now longer lines to wait in for the rides.

No one was in favor of ride bracelets for local kids and a pay system for visitors.

Trustee Bob Gruenewald suggested a later shutdown time for the rides on Friday night.

Trachtenberg said that Conner has requested two portable toilets for their workers.

Coloni asked about moving the live music from the tent back down to the bandstand, to which Trustee Larry Reed responded that that could be done.

“That way you can sit on the hill and listen to the music,” Trustee Steve Hubbard said.

“Plus, the sound gets out better,” Coloni added.

The popular event takes effort, planning and expense.

“I think that $40,000 is money well spent,” Trustee Jim Peck said.
