Village earns ASA award, kudos

Thursday, November 26, 2015

Jerry Stewart, president and member of the executive board for Illinois American Softball Association, paid a visit to Village Hall on Nov. 16 to congratulate the village for a job well done in hosting both a state and national softball tournament this past summer.

Stewart presented Mayor Marilyn Johnson and the Village of Forsyth with a plaque to honor all the hard work and planning that combined for the successful hosting of the two tournaments on back to back weekends. It was the second year in a row that the village had hosted an ASA event, but the first time a national tournament had been held here.

The ASA Men’s Over 50 Fast Pitch National Tournament was held the weekend of July 24-26. The following weekend, July 31-Aug. 2, the ASA Men’s Fast Pitch State Tournament was played. All games were at Forsyth Park.

The plaque read: “James Farrell ASA Award of Excellence presented to Forsyth, Illinois, for conducting one of the highest rated tournaments for 2015.”

Stewart said the village rated 100 percent in several categories, including the quality of the ball diamonds.

“It’s an honor you should be proud of,” Stewart said. “I’m proud of your village. It’s your first time hosting a national event, and we’re coming back.”

Stewart also had high praise for Teri Hammel, executive director of the Decatur Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, for her role as tournament director, noting that he had worked with her for decades.

Back in August, Hammel had told trustees in her recap of the two tournaments that “the ASA people were just blown away.”

Stewart’s visit and the award he presented seemed to confirm that.
