Village appeals $23,000 tax assessment

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Village staff worked quickly to contest a $23,000 tax hike following an assessment of improvements made to the land where the water treatment plant and public works building are located.

“It was the first time the Village had been assessed on the improvements,” said Village Administrator Heather Kimmons. Since the land is designated for public use, a tax exemption was in order and an appeal was made, although the Village went ahead and paid the bill to avoid a penalty while a decision was being made.

“The [Macon County Board of Review’s] recommendation was favorable since it was public use, and it should be exempted,” Kimmons said.
That recommendation will now go to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

“If that agency also upholds the approved exemption, the Village could have its money returned by mid-to-late summer,” Kimmons said.
