Water main break poses challenge

Thursday, September 11, 2014

There’s a good chance you recently saw some pretty heavy-duty work being done late into the night at one of the village’s busiest intersections.

On Aug. 22, at about 4:30 p.m., Public Works Director Larry Coloni was notified of a water main break at the intersection of Route 51 and West Weaver Road.

“There appeared to be corrosion, two holes in the pipe,” Coloni said. “We had a clamp on hand, but it wasn’t wide enough to do the job.”

Coloni had to put in an emergency call to a plumbing supply company to get the right clamp. That took a little bit of time.

“Around 11, we got a stainless steel repair clamp,” Coloni said, adding that getting that proper clamp in place amounts to a permanent repair. The whole job was finished up at around 12:30 a.m.

“It was a long night and stressful because it was a pretty bad leak,” Coloni said. “But they (his crew) worked their way through it.”

A boil order was confined to two nearby businesses, Solar Tan and Lamar Advertising Company. The order was lifted as soon as a sample came back from an EPA lab that deemed the water safe.
