Weaver Road bridge work faces delay

Thursday, September 30, 2010

The Weaver Road bridge construction project planned to start this September has been delayed.

Repair work to the 30-year-old structure will close the road at the bridge for about seven to nine weeks. However, summer construction work is incomplete on two County Highway 20 bridges north of the Village, and drivers still face detours in that area. Repair work to the Weaver Road bridge would mean an additional detour. To avoid creating another detour for drivers, trustees prefer to postpone the Weaver Road project until County 20 repairs are complete.

The present delay involving Weaver Road could hinder the project's completion before deep winter sets in, according to Village Administrator Heather Kimmons. At press time, Kimmons was exploring the option of splitting the project into two segments with completion of the first segment this year and the next one in the spring. This plan is viable since no safety factor is involved, she said.

On Sept. 20, trustees tabled a decision about the project until their Oct. 4 meeting. At that time, Kimmons is expected to have a recommendation based on the latest data available.
